BRE responds to the Hackitt Review

Note: This press release is over six months old and the details may have been superseded. Please contact the Press Office for the latest information.

Responding to the publication earlier today of Dame Judith Hackitt’s review of building regulations and fire safety, Acting CEO Niall Trafford said:

“Along with the rest of the industry, we have read with interest Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review of building regulations and fire safety – Building a Safer Future. We endorse the urgent need to create a simpler and more effective mechanism for driving building safety, and look forward to working with stakeholders from across the built environment to improve buildings in order to better protect people.

“In particular, we are very supportive of a new regulatory framework focused, in the first instance, on higher risk residential buildings 10 storeys or more in height and a new Joint Competent Authority (JCA) to oversee this. We welcome the call for a more streamlined, regulatory route to oversee building standards and more rigorous powers to enforce these. We also welcome the suggestion that there should be additional capacity to undertake the necessary fire safety testing”.
